Bushes for brake shoe hinge pins

Post by drocke »

Living in a hilly area I am trying to improve the stopping power of my 1927 12/4 by renewing various worn parts. Does anyone know a source of the front brake shoe hinge pin bushes part number AM238? It is not a part stocked by VAR.
As far as I can tell they are 7/16 Id x 1/2 od x 7/8 wide. The closest I have found are 7/16 x 17/32 x 3/4 wrapped bushes. If I can't find anything better then I will have a go at turning these down in the lathe if I can make a suitable mandrel to hold them.

All ideas welcome

Thought I would give an update. All attempts at modifying off the shelf bushes both wrapped and oilite types failed. So I got myself some bronze bar and made some up on the lathe from scratch. They are now fitted.
There seems to be a question as to whether bushes were in fact fitted originally as I have been told by others that they had never seen bushes on the hinge pins despite them being shown in the parts list. The fact that my 1927 12/4 had them may be due to some previous repair. Interested to know what the position is on other cars.

I think that the perceived lack of bushes may be due to the fact that they are made from zinc sheet and not actually visible like if they were yellow metal.
