A12/4 rear hub felt rings AO66.

When I came to install the new felts onto the axle, they were considerably smaller than the axle and wouldn't slip on dispite being soaked in heavy oil.
So I went to my 3/4 inch socket set and forced larger and larger sockets into the felt centre, to open up the felt until it slipped on the axle.

I am about to fit the felt seals to the rear hubs, but they seem too thick - I can get around the small hole size with the fitting sleeve I have made. The question is this correct & how tight should I tighten the castle ring? I’m sure it will not tighten to the point that the housing and it’s ribbed lid will touch.
Any advise please?
I’m so close to having a rolling chassis now.

I think I just came back to it day after day and tightened it up a bit more as the felt relaxed/compressed.
But I am sure there is someone out there who can tell us the right way.

First hub going back together - the castle threaded ring still has a long way to go to be where it was when I stripped it down, but it had not been touched for 50 years then.
Can any one say how far I need to go please?

I fitted new sealed bearings on the front axle recently, so no more greasing there for me. Incredible low price from Bearingboys.co.uk. Oddly, the larger one is metric.
