clutch operation

Post by rodlittle »

Does anyone have any suggestions about the following apparently contradictory modes of my clutch? I have a 1927 20hp 6 and the clutch appears to drag, when starting off from rest with the clutch held in it takes forever for the gears to slow down so that I can engage a gear silently. However contrarily if I am in 4th and try to accelerate up a hill the clutch slips until I reduce the revs enough for the slip to stop.
any suggestions welcome before I bite the bullet and remove the gearbox to look at the clutch
thanks

The first thing to do is make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly.
You should have at least 1/2 inch free lift of the clutch pedal with the fingers, lack of free movement is a problem.
Adjustment is easy slacken the bolt and set the pedal forward towards the front of the car.
If the problem is still occurring make sure linkages are not binding, sometimes the clutch pedal scrapes the floor.
Let us know how you get on.

Well Ive given in and removed the gearbox and clutch. to say it has been butchered in the past would be an understatement
hopefully I can now restore it to almost how it should be
