Does anyone know what I should be aiming for as the steering cross tube was dismantled when I purchased the car.
Thanks
Paul

Hello Paul
I've had a look through my copies of the Austin Service Journals and the only reference I can find is from the May 1927 issue. It quotes 3/16" toe-in. There is no further reference up to April 1930 so I presume it didn't change.

Is this figure not quoted in your handbook? I don't have a copy of the 12 book but the 20 book under "running adjustments" says 3/16" so I would think this is common to all the larger cars.

Best regards
Martin

Hi Martin
Thanks for that I have now looked thro the handbook rather than checking on the index and found it.
I enclose a copy of it.
Cheers
Paul

Hello Paul
Yes, you are quite right, it's not in the index. Interesting that your book gives a tolerance whereas mine (1927) and the service journals gives an exact single figure. Perhaps Austin realised by 1929 that it was next to impossible to achieve such accuracy given the method of adjustment and garage test equipment available at the time. And no, I've no idea why some pictures get turned round.

Best regards
Martin

When you get it right, Be aware that there are shims inside that keep the ball tight. If it is that far out, they must be very slack.
