1928 16-6 rear axle - half shafts & hubs.

Post by Adrian Rubie »

The LH rear hub has been working loose on the half shaft taper & has damaged the shaft & hub keyways & Woodruff key.
The hubs are fitted on the shafts with slotted conical sleeves on the tapers (both sides). The LH sleeve has been destroyed by movement on the taper.
Are these sleeves standard fitment?
The LH shaft also has a bronze bush fitted on it next to the end gear, retained by a steel peg in the shaft. This bush (& shaft) run inside the flanged bronze bush in the LH half differential cage. Again, is this standard?

Perhaps the sleeves & bush are production salvage of wrongly dimensioned parts? Ideas please?

Where can I get a replacement half shaft (LH 707mm long), a wheel hub & a conical sleeve?

Sounds like there has been a few problems in the past, best advice would be to source a replacement axle and make one good one out of the two. Problems with the hubs arise because people don’t realise the hub nut has to be done up very tightly to work and consequently leave them loose, hence the worn tapers.
