Cork float of petrol tank
I have a 1927 12/4 Austin. The cork float in the petrol tank has ceased to float & always sinks to the bottom.Tony Smallbone suggested I replace it with a new cork but it proved extremely difficult to remove the old one. I've tried coating it with French polish after drying; that worked for a few days & then sank. Any suggestions?

I abandoned the cork in my 1927 20/4 about 10 years ago as it had started to disintegrate and the bits of cork were blocking the valves in the Autovac. I fitted a plastic float from a modern tank sender unit sourced from a scrapyard. You can cut the original arm a couple of inches from the cork float to get rid of that then solder the arm which comes with the new float to your original arm to simplify the fitting. Just make sure the total length from sender to float is the same as your original. This may not be as Austin built but nobody will see it and it is not affected by modern fuels.
