Kingpin Removal

Post by Austin-App73-77 »

Please could someone give me a clue how to remove the kingpins from the 1928 12/4 I'm have taken on the restoration of?
I have managed to remove the brake drums and brake shoes, from both sides but not sure how to remove the kingpins and don't want to do any damage trying to remove them in the wrong fashion.
Thanks in anticipation

I can't give you any specific advice on how to removes the kingpins but if you have not already done so I would invest in the Workshop instructions available from the VAR spares. It has lots of useful information including kingpin renewal for a 12/4 heavy taxi which is similar to the 12/4 heavy. It comes on a memory stick in a set of indexed files and is well worth the modest fee.
Hope this helps

I am following in your footsteps and have got to this stage, see pic.
Next stage heat and a good whack?

I was lucky as I had my axle removed from the chassis so I was able to drift the kingpins out with a brass punch and big hammer with the axle upside down on the bench.
I was more concerned that I was not going to do any damage by drifting them in the wrong direction - or if there was anything I had missed still holding the kingpin into the axle.
I have mine all back together now.
It looks like you are on the right path from your picture.
If you would like to talk on the phone you will find my number as Media-Moderator in the club magazine. If you are local to me (Worcestershire/ Gloucestershire border) I would be happy to help.
Rob.

Thank you, too far away as I am in Bristol.
But I have now replaced the Jack with wood topped with steel.
Fingers crossed.
