Difficult Gearchange

Post by KernowAustin59 »

Hello
Can I ask for advice please on my Burnham 16/6 1932
I find it difficult to select gears without “crunching “ but not always
Tick over is as low as possible
Changed gearbox oil
Just moving and double de clutching 1- 2 2 - 3 rd etc
I am able to select all gears freely with the engine turned off without the clutch
The parts manual shows springs and balls described as fork springs?
Thank you
Alan

Can't add anything sadly, but would be interesting to see any replies.

Hello Kernow, is this a problem that has become apparent recently or is it an ongoing problem? Did you manage to carry out your gear changes quietly and smoothly before in the car?

Hello Bayliss
Thanks for your reply
I’ve owned the car for 3 years and the gearchange has become increasingly worse
My early memories are of notchy changes but I put that down to my inexperience of a crash box
I’ve changed the oil as advised with straight 40
I’ve made various adjustments on the selector rod to pedal -I think I’ve cracked it then the next time I go out I’m back to square one
I’ve greased the release bearing
Tick over is a little high but when I adjust it back as far as I can she can be very difficult to start from cold
Becoming very frustrated!!
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks again

On my 16/6 I have the tick over set low enough to see the red ignition light glow. Starting the engine I use the hand throttle to set the slightly higher engine speed. As the engine warms I then reduce the hand throttle as required back to the red ignition light glowing on tick over.
I don’t think I am able to assist unfortunately, it certainly sounds like a mechanical issue that has got worse (worn) over time/miles. I assume the clutch is adjusted correctly and indeed still serviceable. That would be my suspicion, worn out clutch.
Hope you quickly resolve and let us know how you get on.

Hello
Replacing the clutch was the answer, although the old one was not worn out it had become impregnated with oil over the years and no amount of brake cleaner was going to remove it.
I know in the hand book it says to burn it off with petrol but I didn’t fancy that lol !!
Thanks for everyones input
