Wheel painting

Post by Ade »

Has anyone had their wheels painted recently? Are they powder coated? How much have you paid to have them stripped and re- painted. Thanks Ade

I sent my wheels to be shotblasted and stove enamelled. The company had 2 attempted to do it and returned the wheels in most unacceptable condition. I decided to paint them myself, rubbed them down with varying grades of wet and dry, applied a coat of red lead, again rubbing down and then 2/3 coats of Japlac black enamel paint, not sure if it is still available but buy one from a specialist supplier. This was 10 years ago and the wheels are still in superb condition and being painted you can touch them up if scratched which is not easy if they are stove enamelled. They receive an annual coat of polish which maybe a little exteme but they look good

Yes,best doing them yourself, only have them blast cleaned if there is deep rust and no solid surface to work on,pick a nice summer week and do them in the garden.
I used Dulux weather shield as a top coat and it,it has lasted very well and is easy to touch up.

I had mine shot blasted & power coated in zinc phosphate primer then gave them a coat of Tractol 916 black primer then 2 coats of Tractol Black Gloss which I warmed up with a blow lamp until it was steaming hot. It’s too thick when cold.
