Fabric coupling

Post by Ivan Hevey »

Hello,
I have a vibration in my 1929 12/4 and I was told it could be the fabric coupling on the drive shaft.
I have attached a photo of the coupling as it is.
I am looking for advice on whether it looks OK or not.

Regards

Hello Ivan
I've seen fabric joints much worse than that before they gave trouble. They usually become soft as they delaminate and appear rippled between the fixings. Yours still looks reasonably flat to me in that photo so although I would not rule it out completely as the source of the vibration I would be looking at other things.

For instance what is that "metal dish" between the fabric coupling and the handbrake drum? And why is it offset with more sticking out one side than the other? This could be the cause of unbalance and the vibration.
Or is that an optical illusion due to the angle the photo was taken from?

No doubt others will come up with more theories.
Regards
Martin

It looks like it’s missing the locking tab washers on the prop yoke nuts, make sure everything is tight. Also check For play in the the blocks at the diff end.
