Re: Cork float of petrol tank
Hello Zeid I abandoned the cork in my 1927 20/4 about 10 years ago as it had started to disintegrate and the bits of cork were blocking the valves in the Autovac. I fitted a plastic float from a modern tank sender unit sourced from a scrapyard. You can cut the original arm a couple of inches from th...

Re: Toe in/out on a 1929 A12/4 front wheels.
Hello Paul Yes, you are quite right, it's not in the index. Interesting that your book gives a tolerance whereas mine (1927) and the service journals gives an exact single figure. Perhaps Austin realised by 1929 that it was next to impossible to achieve such accuracy given the method of adjustment a...

Re: Toe in/out on a 1929 A12/4 front wheels.
Hello Paul I've had a look through my copies of the Austin Service Journals and the only reference I can find is from the May 1927 issue. It quotes 3/16" toe-in. There is no further reference up to April 1930 so I presume it didn't change. Is this figure not quoted in your handbook? I don't hav...

Hello Rod
Can I take it you have read the Austin Service Journals on this subject? It's enough to put anyone off Austin 6-cylinder engines for life!
Best Regards
Martin

Re: Help to identify this one...
Triumph Super Seven.
These were built 1927 - 1932, the early ones being on 3 stud artillery wheels, yours is on the slightly later 3 stud wire wheels but still has the early shaped mudguards. I would guess 1930?

Re: Rear Hub Nut
No. The rear hub nuts need to be very tight as all the drive torque is transmitted through the taper (NOT the key which is only there to stop the shaft spinning in the hub whilst you are tightening the nut). It is important that the tapers are kept fully engaged as any movement here will spoil the t...

Re: Rear Hub Nut
Yes. TIGHT.
But make sure the tapers are clean first. Dirt/foreign bodies trapped in there will spoil the tapers. Also, just like the 7, check you have clearance between the key and the bottom of the hub keyway. Then its a well fitting socket, 2 foot bar and stand on it.

Re: Starter Motor Problem with 12/4
Hello again Neil To dismantle. Look at the back of the motor you will see two screw heads. These are the through bolts. Unscrew these and the drive end casting will pull away. Since the drive spring is broken (we assume) the spiral sleeve and pinion will pull off the armature shaft and you will easi...

Re: Starter Motor Problem with 12/4
Hello Neil Looking at the photo of the drive (the one showing the large gap) you can just see the head of a hex head bolt which attaches the end of a coil spring to the sleeve with the spiral. My guess is that this spring is broken. If you find that this is the case you will be pleased to hear these...

Re: Cylinder head torque settings 12/4
Hello Ian By "service manual" I take it you mean the flash drive available from VAR containing information collected from various sources. This subject has been done before but without total agreement. See the post currently 18 posts down in the technical section titled Torque Settings. Th...
