The first thing to do is make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly. You should have at least 1/2 inch free lift of the clutch pedal with the fingers, lack of free movement is a problem. Yes I agree running to rich. Make sure the choke is returning fully. Don't touch the choke after the first start of the day, they don't normally need anymore choke on the same day. I think you need to do a compression test on all six cylinders. This will give you a good idea if your engine is capable of running properly when everything else is set up correctly.

I had the same difficulty changing down when I first had my 12/4 Burnham. I found over time and with practice it became a lot easier. Take your time,
(you can't rush) listening to the engine revs and a gentle push into gear and maybe a slight touch on the throttle.

I'm down on the south coast, near Chichester.Thats interesting that you are restoring 2 12/4 at the same time mine took me a year to get right, its going well now. It seems to be a bit quiet on our forum hopefully it will pick up. Martin

My name's Martin and I have a 1929 heavy 12/4 Burnham.It was unused for nearly 30 years but it is now running well and I am enjoying using it.
